Successful Methods For Quitting Smoking
As the potentially devastating effects of the health risks become better known, and the act of smoking becomes ever less tolerable to the majority in society, more and more people are searching for the most effective way to quit smoking. Add to that the emotional and demoralizing effects caused by the social pressures and lack of respect caused by the inability to give up this potentially killer of not only yourself, but those around you. With your very life depending on your ability to beat this, the repeated failure experienced by most also has a devastating effect on morale. Yet your life, and those of your loved ones depend on your ability to quit smoking.
It has to be said at the outset that there are many people who have successfully quit smoking through a variety of methods. These include the most obvious method of all, which is simply to decide to stop smoking and then do so. This involves an incredible degree of will power, and the success rate is not high. It is most likely to work when something happens in the environment to trigger a reaction. One of the best examples was when a father saw their child crying as they smoked a cigarette. On asking the child what the matter was, the parent was told that the child wanted them to be alive when they got married. This was enough to jolt the father into making an instant choice to stop smoking.
One of the primary reasons why many people find it difficult to stop smoking is because they are concentrating on the physical cravings which can happen when nicotine is withdrawn, to the exclusion of the mental effects which are far more predictable and severe. There are many aids for smoking cessation which depend exclusively on removing physical cravings, such as nicotine gum and patches which go under the skin and which dispense a dose of nicotine. These treatments are rarely successful on their own as they only treat a small part of the problem.
The most successful ways to stop smoking are those which address the more significant mental aspect of the problem, preferably in conjunction with the physical symptoms of withdrawal. The simple fact is that the inner subconscious mind is extremely resistant to change, and when a smoking habit has been built up over many years, the mind will do everything it can to sabotage attempts to quit unless the belief can be changed that quitting harmful or dangerous. There are many ways to reach the mind and calm it down, and even the use of relaxation tapes alone can help greatly.
It is most effective, though, when positive suggestions are given to the subconscious mind through the use of a treatment such as hypnotherapy. These suggestions can be all the mind needs to feel safe in the knowledge that quitting will actually be positive rather than negative. Once the mind has been convinced and the treatment completed, the survival of the body during times of non-smoking will quickly confirm that the suggestions were accurate. At this point the game is won unless something external triggers a reaction and smoking starts again.
Of the many ways to stop smoking which are advocated, hypnotherapy has the highest rate of success, and the real rate of success is likely to be higher than those which are often quoted. Although sessions are not cheap, it should only take one or two at the most for the treatment to be effective. The failures tend to come when people are not truly committed on all levels to quitting smoking. If you cannot afford to pay for treatments, you can use recordings which are still more effective than the other ways to stop smoking.
